Colquitt wins cross country races

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High cross country teams inaugurated their new course at Packer Park just as they had hoped: by winning both the boys and girls races.

With Heath Lamb taking first place, the Packers defeated Lowndes, Cook and Cairo.

Lindsay Causey took second place as the Lady Packers outscored Lowndes and Cairo.

“The times were up a little,” Colquitt County cross country coach Mell Wier said. “But it was hot and this is a deceptively tough course.

“And the effort was there today. And effort was really what I was looking for.”

The Packers took the top three places in the places in the boys race.

Lamb was first with a 20:16 and was followed by Carlos Charles, who had a 20:37, and Julio Perez, who had a 21:23.

Also finishing in the top 10 were Jonathan Cauthen, who was seventh with a 22:10, and Craig Dabdoub, who was ninth with a 22:30. Also running for the Colquitt County boys on Tuesday were Jebb Cato, 23:15; Joseph Strickland, 23:39; Judd Cato, 24:31; Ben Hoover, 26:24; andZac Goodno, 26:35.

The Packers took first place with 22 points and were followed by Lowndes, 31 points; Cairo, 101; and Cook, 174.

The Lady Packers had 54 points to win the girls race. They were followed by Lowndes, with 42 points; and Cairo with 54.

Causey was second with a 25:22. Also in the top 10 were Lacey Webb, who was fifth with a 27:46; Karlie Brown, who was seventh with a 29:03; Carly Moore, who was eighth with a 29:05; and Morgan Hayes, who was 10th with a 29:40.

Carly Banks turned in a 31:24; Laura Robinson had a 32:07; and Hanna Adair had a 32:09.

Ten members of the Colquitt County middle school team competed in the 3-mile race.

Lindsey Stapleton had a time of 30:88.

From the boys middle school team, Ian Ramos had a 25:18; Hudson May, 25:37; Garrett May, 25:40; Stephen Johnson, 26:36; Andrew Eunice, 32:11; Ryan Littleton, 32:12; Josh Smith, 32:36; Will Bannister, 38:15; and Eli Stripling, 38:15.

On Saturday, Colquitt County ran in the Mercer University meet in Macon.

The boys team finished 12th out of 33 teams. The race was run by Centennial. St. Pius X was second.

Lamb was 31st; Charles, 43rd; Perez, 50th; Dabdoub, 82nd; Cauthen, 131st; Strickland, 153rd; Jebb Cato, 167th; Judd Cato, 168th; and Hoover, 218th.

The race drew more than 300 runners.

“The boys had another good meet,” Wier said. “This was by far the biggest meet we will run in and the boys were eager to show the rest of hte state that we can be competitive.”

The Region 1-AAAAA boys individual rankings, according to GATFXC.com has Lamb, seventh; Charles, 10th; Perez, 12th; Cauthen, 21st; and Dabdoub, 28th.

In the girls race on Saturday, Causey was 38th; Brown, 47th; Hayes, 87th; Webb, 88th; Banks, 93rd; Robinson, 113th; and Adari, 121st.

The Colquitt County girls were 15th out of the 30 teams that ran in the meet, which was won by Centennial. Pace Academy was second.

“The girls again had a good meet,” Wier said. “We had some girls relly step up and show a lot of improvement from the first couple of meet.

“We were without three of our top five runners and to finish where we did shows a lot about the character of the girls who ran.”

The Region 1-AAAAA individual rankings of the Colquitt County girls are Anna Hall, third; Causey, ninth; Moore, 17th; Brown, 21st; and Carla Duque, 22nd.
