Richmond Hill hangs on to defeat Tift County 21-17

MOULTRIE – Richmond Hill kept its unbeaten season alive on Friday when it held off Tift County 21-17.

The Wildcats were one of the two previously unbeaten Region 1-6A teams whose record remained unblemished.

Lowndes lost for the first time when Brett Fitzgerald kicked a 43-yard field goal as time expired to give Colquitt County a 38-35 victory.

And in a battle of unbeaten teams, Valdosta knocked off Camden County 56-37 on Saturday.

Richmond Hill threw just four passes, but the first went for a 66-yard touchdown from Kirk Scott to Caleb Easterling just 61 seconds into the game.

The other two Richmond Hill touchdowns came on runs by Joshua Troupe, who went into the game as the region leading rusher.

His second score put Richmond Hill up 21-10 with 1:15 remaining.

Tift County then drove 80 yards to score on the last play of the last play of the game to cut the final margin to four points.

Damieon Dixon unofficially completed 11-of-21 passes for 172 yards for the Blue Devils, who fall to 2-4.

Tift County will travel to play Lowndes (5-1, 0-1) on Friday.

Also on Friday, Colquitt County (4-2, 1-0) will travel to play Valdosta (6-0,1-0) and Richmond Hill (6-0, 1-0) will travel to Camden County (5-1, 0-1).

Of this and that:

• Landen Thomas had a breakout game for Florida State on Saturday in the Seminoles’ 29-13 loss to Clemson.

The freshman tight end from Colquitt County caught seven passes for 80 yards for the Seminoles, who fall to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the ACC.

Ryan Fitzgerald made his only extra-point attempt and all three of his kickoffs resulted in touchbacks.

• North Carolina State linebacker Kamal Bonner was credited with an assisted tackle in his team’s 34-30 loss to Wake Forest.

Now 3-3, the Wolfpack will be home to face Syracuse on Saturday.

• Le’Meke Brockington contributed a 22-yard pass reception to Minnesota’s 24-17 upset of No. 11 Southern Cal on Saturday.

The 3-3 Golden Gophers will travel to play UCLA on Saturday.

• Georgia Tech raised its record to 4-2 with a 24-14 win over Duke last Saturday with defensive back Omar Daniels being credited with three solo tackles and a pass breakup.

The Ramblin’ Wreck will play at North Carolina on Saturday.

• Ty French had three solo and two assisted tackles in West Virginia’s 38-14 win over Oklahoma State.

The 3-2 Mountaineers will be home to face Iowa State on Saturday.

• Alabama A&M lost 45-38 at Jackson State on Saturday, but Kaleb Dawson contributed two solo and two assisted tackles to its effort.

The Bulldogs will face Bethune-Cookman in their Homecoming game next Saturday.

• Former Colquitt County assistant coach Phillip Brown has his Dodge County team undefeated at 7-0.

The Indians will be off this week, before playing host to Jefferson County on Oct. 18.

• North Forsyth is 3-3 under head coach Robert Craft after losing to Denmark 19-14. The Raiders will play host to North Atlanta on Friday.

• Worth County is 3-3 after edging Thomasville 28-27 on the road on Friday.

Jeff Hammond’s Rams will stay in Sylvester to play host to Berrien on Friday.

• Thomas County Central rebounded from its 35-23 loss to Lee County to pound Veterans 61-10 last Friday.

Now 6-1 overall and 1-1 in Region 2-5A, Justin Rogers’s Yellow Jackets will play Northside-Warner Robins on October 18 at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.

• Coach Byron Slack’s Cook High football team fell to 2-5 and 0-1 in Region 3-AA with a 42-7 loss at Pierce County on Friday.

The Hornets will be in Adel on Friday to play host to Tattnall County.

• Coach Reggie Stancil’s Dacula Falcons fell to 2-4 with a 52-24 loss at Mill Creek last Friday.

The road gets no easier this Friday when Stancil takes his team on the road to play Buford.

• West High School of Salt Lake City, Utah, which opened its season with a loss at Colquitt County, is now 4-4 as it prepares to crosstown rival East High.

West has won four of it last five games.

• Lee County was off last week, but will meet Region 2-5A rival Coffee in Leesburg on Friday.

Both teams are 6-0. Coffee won the Class 6A championship last season.

North Gwinnett is 6-0 after defeating Peachtree Ridge 44-22.

The Bulldogs, 3-0 in Region 7-6A, will travel to play 1-5 Berkmar on Wednesday.
