Lee County is on a roll as it heads to The Mack

- Colquitt County’s Jah’Boris Fuller puts a shoulder into Lee County running back Ousmane Kromah in the Packers 37-20 victory over the Trojans last year in the Hawg Pen.
MOULTRIE — The Lee County football team, which will visit Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium on Friday, did not play last week, nor did the Packers.
But while Colquitt County had to pick up some pieces following its 14-3 loss to North Gwinnett that dropped the Packers to No. 10 in Class 6A, the Trojans had concluded their first three games of the season with a 55-7 victory at Tift County.
The Trojans certainly appear deserving of their No. 3 ranking in Class 5A.
With their lopsided win over the Blue Devils on Brodie Field, the Trojans have outscored their first three opponents by a combined 166-41.
With an offense that features Atlanta-Journal Constitution Super 11 running back Ousmane Kromah, a solid quarterback in Weston Bryan and an offensive line that might be one of the best in the state, the Trojans are expected to be able to roll up some points this season.
Lee won state championships in the state’s second-highest classification in 2017 and 2018, but will face a tough region gantlet just to reach the playoffs.
Region 2-5A includes a pair of defending state champions in Thomas County Central, which went 15-0 last year in the state’s second-highest classification, and Coffee, which won its first state championship playing in Class 5A last year, also going 15-0.
The Trojans will be home to face one more non-region opponent, Wekiva High of Apopka, Fla., currently 1-2, before opening the region portion of its schedule on September 27 at home against Thomas County Central.
The Trojans are likely to come to Moultrie with more than their usual hostility.
Lee County has never defeated a Colquitt County football team, dropping all 12 contests dating back to 1988.
The last four have been particulary disappointing for Leeburg football fans.
Colquitt has won 58-14 in 2014 in Moultrie; 54-17 in 2015 in Leesburg; 48-27 in 2022 in Leesburg; and 37-20 last year in the Hawg Pen.
Those results and scores are perhaps not indicative of the kind of program that Dean Fabrizio has built during his 16 years as the Trojans head coach.
His overall record is 136-49 with six region championships and the two state titles.
His teams have had some outstanding performers over the years, but his 2024 team surely must be counted among the most talented, especially offensively.
Heading into this season, Kromah had rushed for 5,288 yards and 63 touchdowns. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound back also had 804 receiving yards and 12 touchdown catches.
He is off to another quality start this season, having carried 37 times for 377 yards and five more scores.
Against Tift County, he carried 11 times for 144 yards and a touchdown.
And while Lee has not been able to knock off the Packers the last two years, Kromah has been productive.
Last year, he ran for 179 yards and two scores. In 2022, he gained 202 yards and also scored twice.
But he’s not Lee’s only weapon.
Quarterback Weston Bryan returns for his third season of running the Trojans offense.
He has thrown for 509 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 217 yards and seven scores in the Trojans first three games.
He was 16-for-20 for 261 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Tift County.
One of his primary targets is sophomore Jaden Upshaw, who caught seven passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns against Tift.
And Lee County’s offensive line of Jayden Daniels, Dylan Richardson, Brody Hendry, Dom Vigil and Shavez Dixon, along with tight ends Alex Smith and Durrah Butler, was named one of the Georgia High School Football Daily’s Lines of Distinction after the Trojans rolled up 635 yards of offense against Tift County.
The Trojans defense is led by four-star Florida-committed defensive lineman Jeramiah McCloud and senior linebacker Justyn Tanksley.
Kicker Kameron Kirksey has converted 20 of 21 extra point attempts and made all four of his field goal attempts, including a long of 45 yards.
While Colquitt County was off last week, all five of the other Region 1-6A teams were victorious.
• Tift County bounced back from its loss to Lee County to even its record with a 17-14 Thursday night victory at Bainbridge.
The Blue Devils will be at Brodie Field to meet Houston County on Friday.
• Camden County, now 4-0 and ranked No. 5 in Class 6A, had its way with Ribault of Jacksonville, Fla., 62-6. The Wildcats will play host to Spruce Creek, Fla., on Friday.
• Lowndes remains undefeated after four games after winning over Manatee, Fla., 30-15. The unbeaten but unranked Vikings will meet Kell at home Friday.
• Valdosta went to Tampa, Fla., to take down Jesuit High 35-28.
Coach Shelton Felton’s Wildcats, now 4-0, will travel to South Gwinnett on Friday.
• Richmond Hill raised its record to 3-0 with a 47-28 win over New Hampstead and will play host to Wayne County on Friday.
