ADEL – The Colquitt County softball team went to Adel on Thursday to play one of the top Class AA programs in the state and Cook lived up to its billing.
The Lady Hornets swept the Lady Packers 9-0 and 9-6 to raise their record to 8-0 in the young season.
Cooks girls were 28-3 last year.
Colquitt had opened its season with a 13-6 win at Bainbridge and an 11-5 win over Cairo in its home-opener.
But neither the Lady Cats nor the Syrupmaids prepared the Colquitt girls for Cook.
In the five-inning opener, the Lady Packers got singles by RaJayla McBride and Rhylee Tillery, but that was all they could manage against Cook’s Abby Griffis, who struck out nine and did not walk a batter.
Griffis also had three hits, including a homer, to lead the eight-hit Cook offense.
Lilah Thompson pitched the first three innings for the Lady Packers and Kamry Paulk was in the circle for the fourth.
Cook again had nine runs on eight hits in Game 2.
Colquitt got 11 hits – all singles – in the second game but never could catch the Lady Hornets who led 6-2 after three innings.
Peyton Arrington, Libby Wetherington, Montana Tatum and Shayanne Harp each had two hits for the Lady Packers.
McBride, Tillery and Paulk had the others.
Arrington went all six innings in the circle and gave up the nine runs, only six of which were earned.
She also walked three while striking out 11 batters.
The Lady Packers, now 2-2, will travel on Saturday to Cordele where they will play Lanier County at 11:30 a.m. and Wilcox County at 1:30 p.m.
Colquitt will return to Packer Park on Tuesday, April 20, for a junior varsity/varsity doubleheader against Bainbridge.
