Cross country teams fifth and seventh

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls and boys cross country teams finished fifth and seventh respectively at the Tift County Invitational on Saturday, but coach Mell Wier said both are where they need to prepare for top-4 finishes in Region 1-AAAAA meet.

“I’m not as concerned about how we do now as how we do the last few meets before region,” Wier said.

“I thought they all ran well.”

The girls team’s best finisher with Carly Banks, who was ninth with a time of 24.21.

Also running for the Lady Packers on Saturday were Carly Moore, who ran what Wier called an “amazing” 25:23; Karli Brown, 25.27; Morgan Hayes, 26:23; Angela Moxley, 28:35; Maddie Qurnell, 29:02; Hanna Adair, 30:12; Alex Wisham, 33:13; and Danielle Jenkins, 34:16.

Westover finished first in the race, followed by Tift County, Bainbridge, Lowndes, Colquitt County, Lee County, Berrien and Worth County.

The Colquitt County boys team was led by Carlos Charles, who finished seventh overall with a 18:45.

Marcos Gomez, had a 20:34; Nic Price, 21 flat; Heath Lamb, 21:36; Jebb Cato, 21:40; Judd Cato, 22:36; Russ DeMott, 22:52; Ryan Sherling, 24:19; and Taylor Huite, 27:04.

The boys team ran without Julio Perez, who will be back for next Saturday’s meet in Lee County.

Tift County won the boys race, followed by Westover, Valdosta and Berrien.

Wier said the results were “not great,” but he said his teams are “about where I expected them to be and where we need to be if we are going to be No. 2 or 3 in the region.”

In Saturday’s middle school boys race, Alex Littleton was 13th with a 14:30 and Von Stripling was 15th with a 14:50.

Also running for the middle school Packers on Saturday were Austin Hunnicutt, 16:55; Will Bannister, 17:10; Jamal Jones, 17:20; Alex Gomez, 17:50; and Cameron Boys, 18:45.

Robin Byington led the middle school girls with a 17 flat, good for ninth place. Aislin Sheffield had a 17:40 for 13th.

Also running for the middle school girls were Brianna Hill, 18:15; Samantha Price, 18:45; Arial Hughes, 20 flat; Adrienne Jackson, 20:53; Rebecca Weeks, 21:10 and Dusty Hall, 23:15.
