10-and-under boys all-stars to play for state title

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County Gold 10-and-under boys all-stars will play for the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state championship today in Vidalia.
Following Thursday’s state tournament-opening 12-2 victory over Vidalia, Colquitt County defeated Wayne County 10-8 and Swainsboro 6-2 on Friday.
Gold will meet the survivor of the final losers bracket game at 11 this morning. Colquitt County will have two chances to win the championship of the double-elimination tournament.
Colquitt County’s 10-and-under girls all-stars won one game in the state tournament in Tifton on Friday before being ousted by Dublin.
After sweeping four straight games in Leesburg to win the District III championship, the Colquitt boys continued to get timely hitting and play solid defense in Vidalia.
The Colquitt County advanced to the meeting with Swainsboro with the victory over Wayne County earlier on Friday.
After Wayne County scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 8-8, Gold got two in the top of the sixth and retired Wayne County in order in the bottom of the inning to get the victory.
Gold scored three runs in the top of the first an led 6-0 heading into the bottom of the third, when Wayne County got its first run.
Wayne County then scored four in the fourth and three in the fifth to make a game of it.
Jonah Bozeman, Oshay Williams and Tony Simpson each had two singles and a double to lead Colquitt County.
Cason Wells had a double and an inside-the-park home run. Mack Hathcock had two singles and John Gray, Daniel Mobley and Drew Penuel each had one hit. Colquitt County got outstanding defensive efforts from Wells, Gray, Mobley, Hathcock and Eric Gould.
Against Swainsboro, Colquitt County scored single runs in each of the first three innings. Swainsboro scored a run in the fourth and another in the fifth, but Gold put the game away with a three-run fifth inning.
Gray, Bozeman and Wells each had two singles. Hathcock, Mobley and Alex Pate also had base hits.
Shortstop Daniel Mobley, second baseman Mack Hathcock and first baseman Gabe Mobley combined on two doubles plays, including one that ended the game.
The Colquitt County 10-and-under girls, who were the District III runners-up, lost their state tournament opener in Tifton on Thursday to Vidalia 7-3.
The team’s bats heated up in its first game on Friday, a 15-1 losers bracket victory over Tift County.
Colquitt County got three hits from Hannah Sprayberry; two each from Cheyenne Sumner, Taylor Owens, Ainsley Davis, Whitnie Tillman, Kasie Ricks and Tremyia Robinson; and one each from Tara Reynolds, Miaya Thompson, Ashleigh Childs and Cheyenne Tillman.
“They hit the ball very well,” coach Angie Davis said. “They were more aggressive than they were the day before.”
Colquitt County had 14 hits in its second game on Friday, but they were not enough in an 8-7 loss to Dublin.
“We couldn’t bet our hits combined to stay ahead,” Angie Davis said.
Owens led the Colquitt County offense with three hits. Ricks and Cheyenne Tillman each had two.
Sumner, Davis, Sprayberry, Whitnie Tillman, Shelby Rakestraw, Childs and Savannah Morgan each had one hit.
