MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County baseball team ended its seven-game losing streak on Friday with some desperately needed help from an unexpected source.

Chance Pitts pitched a 2-hitter as the Packers laced Westover High in Albany 11-1.

The victory was the first for the Packers since a 17-9 victory over Worth County in the season-opener back on Feb. 27.

The Packers had given up 90 runs in the seven losses since, but Pitts had a perfect game through four innings, a no-hitter through 5 1/3 and did not give up a run until the bottom of the seventh when the Patriots got a leadoff triple and a ground out to score their only run.

The first Westover hit was of the infield variety and the Packers quickly erased that runner with a 3-6-3 double play.

Pitts struck out nine and walked just one.

“I’m really proud of him,” Packers coach Jerry Croft said of his senior right-hander. “He never was in any trouble.

“He gave us four or five good innings on Saturday. He’s a battler. I think he’s going to be able to help us.”

Pitts is the Packers leading hitter and took a .500 batting average in to the game.

The left-handed batter went 0-for-4 against the Patriots, but more than made up for with a crucial outing on the mound.

And the rest of the Colquitt County offense picked up the slack.

The Packers had 14 hits, including three by Andrew Wallace. Sam Heath and Matt Weaver each had two hits and drove in three runs. Wallace had two RBIs.

Clay Hartley and Marcus Stancil got their first varsity hits in the game.

Carter Jones, Scotty DeMott, Tyler Perryman, Drew Shealy and Blake Cato had the other Colquitt County hits.

The Packers scored in every inning but the first.

“Maybe this is a small step toward turning this thing around,” Croft said.

The Packers will be back at Ike Aultman Field at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday for a return engagement with Westover.
