Yellow Jackets defeat Packers 17-7

MOULTRIE — For five innings on Wednesday at Ike Aultman Field, the Colquitt County baseball team appeared poised to end its six-game losing streak.

Colquitt led 5-4 when Thomas County Central came to the plate for the top of the sixth inning and proceeded to cave the roof in on the struggling Packers.

The Yellow Jackets scored eight runs in the sixth inning and five more in the top of the seventh and went on to deal the Packers a 17-7 loss.

Colquitt County falls to 1-7 on the season and has surrendered 11 or more runs in six of those losses.

The Packers team earned run average was 9.99 heading into the game and soared over 10.

Thomas County Central raised its record 5-3.

Kyle Ragan got the win in relief for the Yellow Jackets and also had a hand in the two big innings.

Thomas County Central jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back doubles by Taylor Welch and Austin Taylor off Colquitt County left-hander Matt Weaver.

But the Packers countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first off Yellow Jacket starter Gary Smith, when Andrew Wallace and Carter Jones each singled and both rode home on a single by Chance Pitts.

Colquitt went up 3-1 in the bottom of the second on a run-scoring single by Jones.

The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Welch scoring Tyler New-berry, who had doubled, and on an infield single by Doug Pilcher.

Tyler Perryman drove in a run on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fourth to put Colquitt up 4-3.

Central added a run in the top of the fifth on a double by Taylor, scoring Welch, who had walked.

Scotty DeMott’s run-scoring double in the bottom of the fifth put the Packers back up 5-4.

But Thomas County Central sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth, scoring eight runs off Weaver, Cory Bridwell and Chance Pitts.

The Yellow Jackets had five hits in the inning, including two by Ragan. They also took advantage of a Colquitt County error and three walks.

Leading 12-5, the Yellow Jackets erupted for five more runs in the top of the seventh off Patrick Taylor and Carter Jones.

Central had five more hits in the inning to finish with 15 for the game.

The Packers had at least one hit in each inning and finished with 11. Pitts had three hits. Wallace, Jones and DeMott each had two. Sam Heath and Drew Shealy had the others.

The Packers got three straight hits to open the bottom of the seventh and scored two runs to cut the final margin to 10 runs.

The Packers travel to meet Westover on Friday.
