MOULTRIE — Colquitt County High baseball coach Jerry Croft said he saw some progress when his team met Bainbridge High on the road on Tuesday, but that progress did not pay off in a victory.
The Packers fell 5-2, dropping their sixth straight game since opening with a 17-9 victory over Worth County.
The Packers outhit the Bearcats 7-4, but could not get a clutch hit.
“We just got bogged down when we got runners out there,” Croft said.
The Packers got two hits from Carter Jones and one each from Sam Heath, Chance Pitts, Scotty DeMott, Andrew Wallace and Drew Shealy.
Andrew McDowell went the first five innings and gave up all five runs, although only three were earned.
“I was pleased with what he did,” Croft said the sophomore left-hander.
McDowell struck out two, walked three and hit a batter.
Cory Bridwell pitched a three-up, three-down sixth.
But after giving up 77 runs in the first six games of the season, holding the Bearcats to five runs and four hits was an improvement, Croft said.
“That’s progress,” Croft said. “We played better. We’re going to turn the corner.
The 1-6 Packers will return to Ike Aultman Field at 5:45 p.m. today to meet Thomas County Central.
Colquitt will travel to meet Westover at 6 p.m. Friday.
