MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High baseball team’s losing streak reached five games on Saturday with an 11-1 loss to Luella and a 17-8 loss to Crisp County in Cordele’s Diamond Days.

The event brought Colquitt County, Tift County, Luella and Crisp County together for a full day of baseball.

In the day’s first game, Luella dealt Tift County its first loss of the season with a 7-1 win. The Blue Devils, now 7-1, rebounded to beat Crisp County 7-2.

The Packers trailed 2-1 to Luella when the Lions scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to get the mercy-rule victory.

The Packers had just three hits against the Lions, a double by Carter Jones and singles by Chance Pitts and Scotty DeMott.

Pitts singled and scored the Packers only run on an error in the second inning.

Colquitt found itself down 11-0 quickly in the game against Crisp County, but rallied to score eight runs in the third inning.

But the Packers could not score again.

“We had a little spark there, but we couldn’t bring it all the way back,” said Packers coach Jerry Croft.

The Packers had six hits in the second game, but negated them by committing six errors.

Tyler Perryman and Andrew Wallace each had two hits in the second game. Jones and Pitts had the others.

Jones, the junior second baseman, and Pitts, the senior first baseman have been the Packers most consistent hitters.

“But we’re still having trouble scoring runs,” Croft said. “And we’re having trouble keeping people from scoring.”

Colquitt opened the season with a 17-9 victory over Worth County, but the Packers have lost by a combined 68-16 since then.

“We’re going to get it turned around,” said Croft, now in his 30th season as the Packers coach. “We’re going to keep working.”

Colquitt will travel to Bainbridge to meet the Bearcats at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Packers will be back at Ike Aultman Field at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday to meet Thomas County Central.
