MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High baseball team’s early-season troubles continued on Wednesday as the Packers fell to Lee County 15-2 in five innings in the home-opener at Ike Aultman Field.

The Packers, 1-3, have now given up 49 runs in their four games. And in their last three, the Packers have been outscored 40-7.

Lee County, the defending Class AAAA state runner-up, brought a 1-1 record into the game. The Trojans had two base runners in the first inning, but did not score.

They had no problem getting runners home in the next four innings, defeating the Packers on the mercy rule in five innings.

The Packers had a chance to jump out on top in the bottom of the first, but made the final out at the plate.

Sam Heath stroked the first pitch of the game from Lee County’s Dustin Denney to the fence in left center.

Two outs later, Chance Pitts lined a single to right.

Lee County right fielder Thomas Nichols’s throw to the plate arrived just before Heath did and catcher Matt Fenton made the tag and held on to end the inning.

The Packers finally scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but by then they merely cut the Trojan lead to seven.

The Trojans scored six runs in the top of the fifth and the Packers wasted a Carter Jones double in the bottom of the inning to close things out.

Lee County went up 2-0 in the top of the second off Colquitt County starter Andrew Wallace, although both runs were unearned.

One run scored on a wild pitch; the other on a ground out by Colby Whitehead, scoring Fenton, who had doubled.

The Trojans scored three more in the third, with Jack Posey driving in two with a single. Posey scored on Brandon Fowler’s single.

Ben Glass opened the top of the fourth with a double and Nichols followed with a home run to make it 7-0 and chase Wallace.

Pitts came on and gave up two more runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Heath made his first appearance of the season on the mound if the fifth, walking the first two batters he faced before giving up a grand slam to Posey.

Matt Weaver gave up the final Lee County run.

Lee County pounded out 14 hits, including two each by Glass, Nichols, D’Vontrey Richardson, Posey and Fowler.

Posey drove in six runs with his two-run single and grand slam.

The Packers took advantage of singles by Jones and pinch-hitter Javaris Jackson to scored their two runs in the fourth.

Colquitt had five hits: a double by Heath, a double and a single by Jones and singles by Pitts and Jackson.

The Packers will travel to Crisp County High’s Diamond Day to meet Luella at 3 p.m. and Crisp County at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
