ALBANY, Ga. — Vernon Simmons, 89, of Albany, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Cobb Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Benton officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery with military honors.

Born Oct. 3, 1926, in Palatka, Fla., he was the son of the late Pearl Whidby Simmons and Rayel Simmons. He served in the U.S. Air Force 23 years and retired as a senior master sergeant, and he worked with the Dougherty County Board of Education in the maintenance department.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Sellers Simmons.

Survivors include his daughters, Catherine R. Simmons and Joe Sells of Albany, Ga., and Sandy Simmons Dieckman and Dick of Sylvester, Ga.; grandson Jeremy Simmons and Amanda of Fitzgerald, Ga.; and great-grandchildren, Clay Simmons, Kylie West and Isabella Simmons.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. at Hall and Hall Funeral Home in Albany.

The family will also receive friends one hour before the service on Tuesday at Cobb Funeral Chapel.
