- Colquitt County seventh-grade quarterback Jaxon Rowell (8) and offensive coordinator Jon Scroggins meet during the team's victory over Hahira on Wednesday in The Hawg Pen.
MOULTRIE – The Hahira seventh-grade football team ran 11 plays and took 4 1/2 minutes off the clock after taking the opening kickoff in its game against Colquitt County on Wednesday in the Hawg Pen, but had nothing to show for it.
After its defense forced the Vikings to turn the ball over on downs on the Packers 30, Colquitt wasted little time in scoring its first touchdown of the season.
On the first offensive snap, My’King Johnson ran a sweep to the left, turned upfield, shook off the last Viking defender near midfield and bolted 70 yards for a touchdown.
A rushing attempt for the 2-point conversion failed, but the Packers had a 6-0 lead and had clearly taken the wind out of the Vikings sails.
Colquitt scored three more touchdowns in a 28-6 win in which Hahira did not score until the second play of the fourth quarter.
Hahira did win the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader on Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium, when its sixth-grade team defeated Colquitt 26-8.
The Colquitt County seventh-graders also were awarded two points for a safety with 56 seconds remaining in the first quarter when a Hahira snap in punt formation was covered by the Packers in the end zone.
It didn’t take long for Colquitt to build on its 8-0 lead in the second quarter.
On the first play, Packers quarterback Jaxon Rowell, son of Colquitt County varsity defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell, threw to Julez Irvin, who made an outstanding juggling catch and raced to the end zone to complete the 47-yard touchdown.
Again, the Packers were unable to convert, but led 14-0 with 7:50 remaining in the second quarter.
With 2:24 left in the first half, Cade Calhoun, son of Colquitt County varsity head coach Sean Calhoun and the other half of the seventh-grade team’s coaches’ sons quarterback tandem, threw an 80-yard touchdown strike to Xylan Spivey and the Packers were up 20-0 at the half.
Colquitt extended its lead to 28-0 on the third play of the second half when Spivey ran 34 yards for his second touchdown of the game.
Calhoun threw to Johnson for the conversion.
Led by the touchdown runs by Johnson and Spivey, the Packers rushed for 132 yards. They threw for 127 more.
And when Hahira had the ball, the Packers were resilient.
“Defense played well,” coach Andy Chapura said. “We bent, but we did not break.”
In the sixth-grade game, Colquitt’s only score came on a 5-yard run by Jaycion Jones with 1:06 remaining. Jones also added the 2-point conversion.
The Colquitt sixth- and seventh-grade teams will be back at the stadium on Wednesday, August 28, for a doubleheader against Tift County starting at 4 p.m.
