Pack undersclassmen earn Player of the Week honors

MOULTRIE – Four of the Packers who earned Player of the Week honors for the season-opening victory over West High of Salt Lake City, Utah, are underclassmen.
Junior Malik Walker caught three passes for 48 yards from freshman quarterback Cohen Lawson to earn the Offensive Player of the Week award.
Guard Jamaal Jackson, also a junior, graded 84 percent and had 12 knockdown blocks to earn the Offensive Lineman of the Week honor.
Sophomore Nyneson Jeudy Jr. excelled on the defensive line with six tackles, one for a loss and a sack and was the Defensive Player of the Week.
Another 10th-grader, Ty’Mhyr Moore, was named the top offensive scout team player.
Senior defensive tackle Jartavious Flounoy had five tackles, one for a loss, a sack and two quarterback-hurries in the 45-28 win over the Panthers and was named the Defensive Lineman of the Week.
Not surprisingly, two seniors shared Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Brett Fitzgerald was 6-for-6 on extra-point attempts, converted a field goal attempt from 48 yards and put all eight of his kickoffs into the end zone.
Jah’Boris Fuller returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, took a punt back 25 yards and blocked an extra-point attempt.
Senior offensive lineman Blaine Autrey, who started the school year with a 105.25 grade-point average, was named the Academic Player of the week.
Senior receiver Edward Browning was named the Defensive Scout Team Player of the Week.

Three Region 1-6A teams are in the Georgia High School Football Daily’s Top 10.
The Packers moved up from No. 5 to No. 4; Camden County remains at No. 8; and Valdosta enters the top 10 at No. 9.
Valdosta looked strong in its 65-19 win over Tucker at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. Senior quarterback Todd Robinson completed 19-of-29 passes for 319 yards and four touchdowns. Deron Foster rushed 129 yards and three touchdowns.
Quarterback Parks Riendeau completed 11-of-19 passes for 185 yards in three touchdowns as Camden County opened the Travis Roland era with a 51-41 win over Brunswick.

Former Packer Ty Phillips is entering his first season as the defensive line coach at Georgia Military College. Phillips helped lead the Packers to back-to-back state championships in 2014 and 2015.
He went on to play collegiately at Georgia Southern, where he was an all-conference selection and where he earned his degree in interdisciplinary studies with a minor in business.

Including Valdosta’s Shelton Felton and Colquitt County’s Sean Calhoun, 11 former Packers are high school head football coaches this season and seven led their teams to season-opening victories.
• After leading defending state champion Thomas County Central to a 54-7 victory over Monroe last Friday, Justin Rogers is just one victory away from having 100 in his career.
Rogers is 99-23 in 10-plus seasons at Jones County, Colquitt County and Thomas County Central.
The Yellow Jackets will travel to meet Cairo in the Syrupmakers’ season-opener on Friday.
• Starting his ninth season as the head coach at North Forsyth, Robert Craft and his Raiders got a forfeit victory at Wheeler on Friday.
Wheeler led 7-0 at the half, but after a long weather delay, the game was called off and North Forsyth was declared the winner.
• Jeff Hammond and his Worth County Rams won 44-6 at Turner County last Friday.
Hammond is starting his third season in Sylvester, where he has led the Rams to a 14-9 record.
Former Packer Bull Barge is the team’s defensive coordinator.
The Rams will go to Irwin County on Friday.
Valdosta’s win over Tucker raised Shelton Felton’s record at Valdosta to 21-13.
The former Colquitt County assistant and Crisp County head coach has an overall head coaching record of 37-21.
The Wildcats will be home to face Mundy’s Mill on Friday.
• Bill Ragans, who was an assistant coach at Colquitt County under Tim Cokely, led Chiles High of Tallahassee to a 24-6 season-opening victory over St. Paul II.
The Timberwolves, who were 6-4 under Ragans last season, will travel to Dothan, Ala., on Friday.
• Byron Slack’s Cook High Hornets, coming off an 11-3 season, opened with a 45-13 victory over Berrien.
Slack is now 20-7 in Adel, where he is starting his third season.
Cook will travel to Bainbridge on Friday.
• Phillip Brown’s first Dodge County team will open on Friday at Bleckley County.
• Alabama’s Pike Road High School football team, under former Packers assistant Granger Shook, will open on Thursday at Prattville.
Pike Road was 11-3 last year in its first year playing for Shook.
• Starting the season with losses were Dacula, under Reggie Stancil, and Swainsboro, under Scott Roberts.
Stancil is in his second season as the head coach at Dacula.
The Falcons, who will play at Meadowcreek this Friday, lost their opener to Duluth 33-7.
Swainsboro, which has gone 25-4 with state runner-up finishes the last two seasons under Scott Roberts, dropped its opener 41-21 to Dublin last week.
Roberts has a career record of 79-34.
The Tigers will play at Emanuel County Institute on Friday.
