- The Arts Center of Moultrie offers numerous classes for youth and adults alike in visual, performing, and musical arts. Funded in part by a grant from the Southwest Georgia Council on Aging, many classes for senior adults are free.
The Arts Center of Moultrie is a creative cultural resource that makes quality visual and performing art available to a diverse population. It provides engaging arts education for children and adults, acts as a steward of permanent collections, and maintains a landmark facility that enriches the whole community.
The Arts Center of Moultrie is truly the place where creativity grows. Under the roof of The Arts Center you will find dance, music — including piano, voice, drums, violin, and guitar — theater, pottery, drawing, painting, mosaics, stained glass, basketry, quilting, and so much more!
The stately brick building that houses The Arts Center on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Fourth Street Southwest has served the community for over 90 years. The old Moultrie High School has been a beloved landmark in this area since it was built in 1928. The sprawling school complex boasted indoor plumbingand electricity in 1928. Arts Center staff have heard many stories about the classrooms that are now gallery spaces or art studios. People have pointed to a room and told about the teacher that taught science or history in that space — and the time spent in the principal’s office! They still have fond memories of the time they spent in this very building that continues to be filled with creative educational experiences.
With three gallery spaces that change exhibits six to eight times per year, there is always something new and fresh to explore on the walls and pedestals of The Arts Center. In addition to a 72-piece collection that includes works of John Sargent Singer, Mary Cassatt, and members of the Wyeth family affectionately named the McCall Collection for the collector of the pieces — architect William Frank McCall — there is also a contemporary gallery with pieces from Dale Chihuly, Andy Warhol, the Moulthrop Family and many more contemporary artists. Local artists have the opportunity to exhibit their works in the Traverse gallery throughout the year.
Classes and workshops fill the halls, studios and stage with the sounds of music, laughter and learning. Each day there are classes and workshops for all ages and skill levels. Open studio times give artists the opportunity to work on pieces under the guidance of a skilled instructor. The Pick and Paint Pottery studio is filled with a varietyof pre-fired bisque ware just waiting for a creative coat of paint and glaze for a beautiful finished keepsake or gift. The beautiful ballroom is available for rental as are other spaces in the building. The Arts Center also offers themed birthday parties for children including tea parties, Disney princess parties, pirate parties and more.
The staff looks forward to your visit. They love to tour folks through the beautiful old building and guests are always amazed that such a gem as this exists in sucha rural corner of the state.
