David Spence receives Harrison Humanitarian Award

MOULTRIE, Ga. — David Wm. Spence has been named the 2018 recipient of the Walter E. Harrison, Jr., M.D. Humanitarian Award. Spence was presented the award at the 24th Annual Colquitt Regional Medical Foundation Love Light ceremony held in the Kate Jeter Serenity Garden.

The award, named in honor of beloved physician Dr. Walter E. Harrison Jr. is presented annually. It recognizes an individual health care worker who demonstrates a commitment to compassionate health care service and community outreach. These were the guiding principles of Harrison’s medical career.

“Dr. Harrison believed in helping those in need,” a press release from Colquitt Regional Medical Center said. “He practiced this belief both at home and in medical missions abroad. Colquitt Regional Medical Foundation established the award following Harrison’s death in December of 2010.”

Jim Matney, Colquitt Regional CEO, said of Spence, “All of this year’s nominees are dedicated individuals, but David Spence has gone above and beyond in sharing his compassion with others. David is known for his positive attitude and uplifting spirit. His energy is contagious and his drive to help others is inspiring.”

Director of diagnostic imaging, Spence has 45 years of dedicated service at Colquitt Regional. In addition to the duties of running a key hospital department he provides direct patient care and is recognized as an exceptional healthcare provider.

Spence has been involved with countless non-profit organizations in Colquitt County throughout the years. His volunteer service has benefited United Way, Moultrie Food Bank, American Cancer Society, Colquitt County Arts Center, Teen Maze and Children’s Cheer and Toy Shop. He is a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and is generous with both his time and his talents.

Well-known for being proactive, often times Spence will set up his own initiatives to fulfill an organization’s needs such as back-to-school supply drives for local schools or pet supply drives to benefit the Human Society.

“David Spence exemplifies the principles Dr. Harrison followed,” said Colquitt Regional Medical Foundation Chairman John Mark Mobley. “He is a true humanitarian showing absolute compassion and love for everyone.”

Upon receiving the award Spence humbly said, “I just love my community and I love my hospital.”

Spence now joins an elite group in receiving this recognition for his own selfless care of others and his steadfast support of numerous community organizations. This group includes Dr. Seth Berl, Denise Linnenkohl, RN, Dr. Patricia Lee June, Dr. D.W. Adcock, Barbara James, RN and Karen Hart RN, CMSRN.
