High speed chase ends with two arrests

OMEGA, Ga. — A car chase that started in Omega and ended in Colquitt County resulted in two teens being charged with being in possession of a stolen car.

According to a report from the Omega Police Department, an officer was alerted via tag reader that a 2005 Ford Explorer that passed him on HWY 319 had been reported stolen out of Sylvester.

When the officer attempted to pull the driver over, the SUV sped away south towards Colquitt County with the officer in pursuit.

The report states that the SUV was going over 100 miles per hour when it left Tift County and entered Norman Park, at which point the Norman Park police officer attempted to slow the speeding SUV down. The attempt was unsuccessful, but the SUV did slow to approximately 90 mph while going through Norman Park, weaving around the Norman Park officer’s patrol vehicle and crossing into the other lane.

The report states that the SUV picked up speed again after leaving Norman Park, at which point the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit.

The OPD officer, NPPD officer and CCSO deputies pursued the SUV as it fled down Woodman Road, Old Doerun Road, Swift Canteen Road and B.F. Giles Road, where it crashed into an embankment.

The three occupants of the vehicle fled on foot. Two of the occupants, Raekwon Jamal Brown and Joshua Lewis, were caught shortly after laying in nearby thorn bushes, the report states.

Brown, 17, of Poulan, was charged with obstructing law enforcement officer, theft by receiving stolen property valued at $500 or more, possession of marijuana (less than one oz.), speeding, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries or damage, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude police more than 30 mph over the speed limit, failure to maintain lane and failure to stop at sign, the report states.

Lewis, 18, of Sylvester, was charged with obstructing law enforcement officers, possession of marijuana (less than one oz.) and theft by receiving stolen property valued at $500 or more,, the report states.
