Former teacher arrested for heroin released on bond

DALTON, Ga. — The former Northwest Whitfield High School teacher arrested for having heroin on school grounds and accused of having a sexual relationship with a juvenile male student was released from jail Tuesday on a $30,000 bond. Raquel Eleana Spencer, who was an English teacher at Northwest before resigning after her arrest, received a $20,000 bond from Superior Court Judge William Boyett on the charge of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority. She received a $10,000 bond on the possession of heroin charge. According to the Whitfield County jail, Spencer posted bond Tuesday afternoon. Calls to her attorney as listed by the Clerk of Courts office were not immediately returned Tuesday. According to the clerk’s office, there were 12 conditions on the bonds — conditions such as avoiding contact with the reported victim and staying off of school grounds are typical in cases such as this — but the complete paperwork had not been filed by the court as of Tuesday afternoon. Spencer was arrested at the school on April 25 after students and staff reported erratic behavior by her to school administrators and heroin was found in her personal property on school grounds. During the investigation, a sexual relationship with a student was revealed through a search of her phone. Capt. Paul Woods with the sheriff’s office said the relationship had been going on for at least a year and began when the student was a juvenile.

Milledgeville man charged in drive-by shooting case

SPARTA, Ga. — A 23-year-old Milledgeville man has been arrested and charged with a Sunday morning drive-by shooting that wounded a Sparta man, local authorities say.

Three more suspects, meanwhile, are being sought in connection with the shooting that happened about 2 a.m. outside Club Cabaret.

The victim in the shooting was identified as Ricardo Hunt of Sparta.

One of the suspects was later arrested by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office after he and the three other men jumped out of a Ford Crown Victoria at the dead-end of Central Avenue in Milledgeville and fled from authorities on foot.

A search of the area turned up only one of the four suspects.

That suspect was Javontae Martez Adams, of 113 Romona Drive, Milledgeville. Adams was charged Tuesday with a felony count of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm on a public roadway.

Adams still was being held Tuesday afternoon in the Hancock County Jail in Sparta.

The drive-by shooting happened as patrons were starting to leave Club Cabaret at closing. Hunt was wounded while standing outside the club.

A security guard at the club provided authorities with a description of the car seen speeding away from the club after the gunfire erupted.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the other three suspects in the shooting case remained at-large.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office at 706-444-6471.

Tire recycling event returns Friday and Saturday

MOULTRIE, Ga. — Colquitt County residents with old tires lying around taking up space in the shed or breeding mosquitoes outdoors can get rid of them this week free of charge. The tire amnesty event for scrap tires will be held Friday and Saturday at Colquitt County’s recycling center. A previous tire amnesty was a huge success, Colquitt County Administrator Chas Cannon said, so the idea was to give residents another shot. Tires can be dropped off from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. both days at the 245 23rd St. N.E. facility. To reach it, turn at Barber’s Restaurant off Highway 133 South. Acceptable scrap tires are those from passenger cars, tractor trailers and front and rear farm tractors. The county will not accept heavy equipment tires, skidder tires or tires from retail tire dealers or scrap tire generators. For additional information, contact Colquitt County Solid Waste Department at 229-616-7405.
