TIFTON — Fitzgerald High’s football team is getting an unexpected break this week.

The Purple Hurricane’s scheduled game with Rockdale County, which had been set for Friday, has been changed to Oct. 7 at 5 p.m.

Fitzgerald High School announced the change in schedule Wednesday on its Facebook page.

Schools had been out in Ben Hill County through Wednesday because of damage related to Hurricane Irma.

This week was supposed to be homecoming at Fitzgerald. The homecoming dance will still be held Saturday evening, but all other events have been moved to Oct. 2-6.

Fitzgerald will also not play a football game next week, but that was a scheduled bye week. The Purple Hurricane will next be on the field Sept. 29 when they host Tift County.

Before the change, Fitzgerald had hoped to rebound from last week’s 42-21 loss against Macon County. The loss dropped the squad to 1-3 on the season, their toughest start since a 1-4 beginning in 1999.
