VALDOSTA — Cassandra Davis was driving a motorcycle in Lowndes County in February 2016 when she collided with a car that was coming the other way and turned into her lane.

The accident ended her life. She was 54 years old.

Now, the man and woman who were in the car that caused the deadly wreck — Robert Bellew and Cierra Hernandez — have been charged with lying about who was driving the car.

The couple originally told Georgia State Patrol that Hernandez was driving the car, but it was later discovered that Bellew — who reportedly had alcohol and methamphetamine in his system when the crash happened — was the one behind the wheel, court documents claim.

A grand jury indicted Bellew, 27, and Hernandez, 27, last week for giving false statements to GSP.

The grand jury also charged Bellew with vehicular homicide, reckless driving and failure to yield the right of way, according to court documents.

“She was probably originally taking the rap for him because he must’ve had drugs in his system. Then, they came back and finally admitted (that) he was driving,” Southern District Attorney Brad Shealy said.

Shealy added that vehicular homicide carries a penalty of three to 15 years in prison, and the punishment for giving false statements is one to five years.

A trial date has not yet been set, Shealy said.
