Such behavior should not be tolerated here

During the holidays, there were numerous reports of people firing guns into the air in  celebratory exercises. And it was bound to happen, someone got killed.

A projectile fell from the air and hit a man on the head.

Mathematically, the chances of that happening are likely very slim. But the math doesn’t matter if you are the victim.

We’ve talked about gun safety a lot in this column. Our concerns have dealt with safety storing guns, training for those new to guns,  the laws regarding carrying guns in a vehicle or on the person and hunting safety.

The aforementioned case in point is purely reckless endangerment. Willy nilly firing a gun can end badly. At least two people in Colquitt County have been hit by falling projectiles.

We are told that quite often, celebratory gunfire may also involve alcohol which adds even a greater dimension to reckless endangerment.

The celebratory gunfire has been described more than once as a tradition and custom of another culture.

To cut to the chase, the reference has been Hispanic revelry.

And while it may occur mostly in predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods, that doesn’t make this kind of behavior acceptable. As someone has already expressed about the situation, it does not lend to the peace and dignity of our community.

Indeed we should hope that word will be put out by law enforcement and other agencies that this type of activity will not be tolerated here. We have enough incidents where gun mishaps are determined to be accidental. We don’t need to upgrade that potential for tragedy by adding intentional reckless behavior.

To those who engage in such dangerous behavior, we ask that you respect the aforementioned efforts of “peace and dignity.”
