Ex-Packer Johnson named to All-America team

Murray State’s Dontrell Johnson has been named to the The Sports Network/Fathead.com All-America second team as a punt returner.

The former Packer is the first Racer to earn All-America honors as a punt returner.

Johnson set a school record by returning two punts for touchdowns, while leading the Football Championship Series with a 22.8 average per return.

Among his returns was one for 91 yards and a touchdown against UT-Martin and another for 70 yards and a touchdown against Jacksonville State.

• Auburn’s Anna Aguero took first place on both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards in the recent LSU Diving Invitational.

After the former Moss Farms and Colquitt County diver scored a season-best 327.90 on 3-meter, Auburn diving coach Jeff Shaffer said, “Anna used a new dive and was very successful.”

She also scored a 289.35 to win on 1-meter and had a season-best 265.6- to finish second on platform.

The Auburn divers will travel to Knoxville to compete in the Tennessee Diving Invitational on Monday through Wednesday.

• Tommy Flowers was named the Gainesville (Ga.) Times area Football Coach of the Year after leading the White County football team to a 9-3 record and the first home playoff victory in school history.

The former Packer took over as interim head coach on Sept. 22 after Gregg Segraves was placed on indefinite leave. Segraves later resigned amid allegations of domestic violence by his wife.

Flowers, who had been an assistant at Thomas County Central and Tift County before going to Cleveland, was serving as a head coach for the first time.

It is unclear whether Flowers will be the team’s head coach next season. The school board has yet to name a coach for the 2011 season.

• Samford’s Quin Roberson has been named to the Southern Conference’s All-Freshman team.

The former Packer led Samford and ranked 10th in the conference with 31 catches for 474 yards nad three touchdowns. He also ran the football eight times for 43 yards.

Samford, which finished 4-7 and lost four of its last five last season, will have a new offensive coordinator and a new receivers coach next season.

Head coach Pat Sullivan recently named Rhett Lashlee as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach and Antonio Carter as the wide receivers coach.

• Former Packer Nathaniel Hill is averaging 8.9 points a game for Daytona State College.

The 9-7 Falcons, who defeated Tallahassee Community College 60-59 on Dec. 17, will meet St. Petersburg College at home on Thursday.

• Former Packer Chris McAlpin, now a scout for the California Angels, will be one of the speakers at the 2011 Georgia Dugout Club’s free youth coaching clinic, which will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Performing Arts Center at Valdosta High School.

The clinic is open to those coaching T-ball through senior league age and will focus on fundamentals, practice organization and game situations.
