Black Sox take second in tournament

MOULTRIE — Despite losing its first game, Colquitt County’s Georgia Black Sox rallied to take second place in the Easter Baseball Bash held Saturday in Leesburg.

The Black Sox, an 11-and-under traveling team, opened with a 10-4 loss to the Lee County Trojans.

Alex Abbott started on the mound for the Black Sox and took the loss, allowing four runs and four hits.

Tyler Yost also pitched, allowing six runs and four hits.

The Black Sox managed just six hits, including two each by Abbott and Preston Berry.

One of Berry’s hits was a double. He drove in three of his team’s four runs.

Matt Gerald had a double and Dustin McAlpin and Daren Kent each had one hit.

The Black Sox rebounded to defeat the Bainbridge Bearcats 10-1.

McAlpin got the win, allowing the only Bainbridge run and four hits. He struck out three.

Blake Bennett also pitched, allowing no runs and two hits while striking out one.

Aubrey McCarty had the big blow, a fourth-inning grand slam.

Gerald, McAlpin, Kent and Andrew Eunice each had two hits. Bennett and Yost each had a hit.

Gerald and Eunice also drove in runs.

The Black Sox pounded out 18 hits and avenged its loss to Lee County with an 18-3 victory.

McCarty was the winning pitcher after allowing just two hits.

Kent, McCarty and Garrett Pearce each had three hits, with Kent driving in four and McCarty driving in three. Eunice, McAlpin and Bennett each had two hits.

Abbott and Yost had the others. Eunice also drove in three runs.

In the championship game, the Black Sox fell to the Perry Predators 7-5.

McAlpin took the loss, allowing four runs and five hits while striking out three. McCarty surrendered three runs and four hits.

McCarty had two hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning. Abbott, McAlpin and Bennett each had two hits and Kent and Gerald each contributed a single.
