Traffic stop leads to five arrests
DALTON, Ga. — A traffic stop on Thursday led to the discovery of “a large quantity” of meth, marijuana, approximately $2,000 in cash and a handgun in a vehicle and the eventual arrest of five people after more guns were found in a second vehicle, according to Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood.
Chitwood said in a press release that the first traffic stop occurred at about 10:25 a.m. on the south bypass. The deputy thought the driver and passenger “to be overly nervous,” and a K-9 dog was used outside the van. The dog “alerted” on the presence of an illegal drug inside, and a search found the meth, the marijuana, the cash and the handgun.
Arrested were the driver, Nicolas Ochoa Olguin, and the passenger, Manuel Hernandez.
Chitwood said based on evidence obtained during the search, detectives located Megan Burkett, who was wanted for trafficking in heroin. She had meth when she was arrested, he said.
That afternoon, narcotics officers were following a vehicle believed to be connected to Olguin and Burkett in the Upper Ridge Road area, Chitwood said.
“This vehicle suddenly pulled into a driveway and a passenger in the vehicle jumped out and started running,” he said. “The suspect that ran from the vehicle was caught by an officer. He was identified as Jonathan Long. Two other individuals in the vehicle were the driver … and another passenger, David Gunter. Some handguns, an assault rifle and a hunting rifle were located inside the vehicle. Investigators believe Long and Gunter may have been getting the firearms out of Burkett’s and Olguin’s house before law enforcement arrived.”
Olguin, 25, of 275 Brackett Ridge Loop in Chatsworth, and Hernandez, 29, of 619 S.E. 19th St. in Oklahoma City, Okla., were charged with trafficking in meth.
Burkett, 27, of 406 Forrest Park Road in Dalton, was charged with trafficking in heroin and possession of meth.
Gunter, 32, of 120 W. Locust St. in Chatsworth, and Long, 24, of 795 Ridgeview Circle in Chatsworth, were charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
All five are being held in the county jail.
