MOULTRIE – Power Derby, Home School Monday Makers, Active Adult Activities, a Focaccia Bread Workshop and more make Moultrie Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Authority a busy place in February.
Kids Activities
MCCPRA is hosting its first ever Powers Wheels Derby for children age 2-7. Participants will race their power wheels down 11th Avenue near Tommy Meredith Gym. Every racer receives a medal and heat winners will compete for trophies. Check in starts at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, February 1, with races beginning at 10 a.m. The registration fee is $10 per person and the deadline to register is January 31.
“Little Sluggers,” ages 3-14, can step up to the plate for Spring Ball. Teams will practice one day a week during March. Coaches choose day/practice times. Approximately two scheduled games per week will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning around 6 p.m., during the months of April and May. Needed equipment includes glove and athletic shoes. Cleats are not required. January 31 is the deadline to register to play ball.
Homeschool Monday Makers will gather on Monday, February 10, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Ryce Community Center to enjoy all things, Valentine. Older students (13 & up) will make valentine candy. Then, all students will make Valentine cards, Valentine photo hearts and heart fingerprint magnets. The fee per student is $5 and registration is required by February 6.
Friday, February 28, from 6 to 8 p.m., students in 1st-6th grades will enjoy a pizza supper and Nerf Night. The registration fee is $10 per player and the registration deadline is no later than Wednesday, February 19.
Saturday, February 22, MCCPRA will partner with NAACP of Colquitt County, Federated Club of Moultrie, Colquitt County School District, and the Arts Center of Moultrie to present the “Visual, Vocal and Vivacious Artistic Showcase” for students in 6th-8th grades and 9th-12th grades, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Arts Center. So, students are encouraged to enter the oratorical, art or interpretive dance competition for cash prizes and other awards. The deadline to register to participate is February 14. Adults Activities
Beginning Thursday, February 6, and continuing February 13 and 27, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., individuals can learn to crochet. Participants will learn the traditional Granny Square pattern to create a lap blanket.
On Friday, February 28, beginning at 5:30 p.m., join others to learn the Art of making Focaccia Bread.
Also, for all adults in the month of February there are a variety of free opportunities including Chair Yoga followed by Flow Yoga on Monday and Wednesday mornings starting at 9:30 a.m. at Ryce Community Center.
Each Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Ryce Center, Active Adults (50 years and older) will enjoy a variety of monthly themed projects and activities. February will include Valentine candy making, Valentine card making, sewing lavender sachets and sewing a soup bowl cozy.
Walk the Gym, Meredith or Shaw, every morning from 10 a.m. until noon. Gather up friends and walk in a warm safe environment.
Cardio Drumming with Connie Fritz will take place on Mondays, beginning at 5:15 p.m., at Tommy Meredith Gym. Enjoy a light cardio workout with some favorite tunes.
First Friday for February is a movie night at Ryce Community Center on February 7, beginning at 5:30 p.m., with a soup supper. “Casablanca” is the movie and the event will include popcorn, candy and drinks.
All the active adult opportunities are free but require registration.
