MOULTRIE – Down by a point after three quarters at Camden County on Friday, Colquitt County scored 17 straight fourth-quarter points to take a remarkable 51-41 victory over the Wildcats that clinched a playoff berth for the Packers.
And Colquitt, now 3-1 in Region 1-6A, will meet Richmond Hill at The Hawg Pen next Friday with a chance to win the region championship. Richmond Hill fell to Lowndes 28-7 on Friday.
If Colquitt wins and Lowndes defeats hobbling Valdosta in the Winnersville Classic at Martin Stadium, the Packers will win a third-straight region title.
If the Packers and Valdosta both win on Friday, the two would finish tied atop the standings at 4-1, but Valdosta would get the top seed by virtue of its 7-3 win over the Packers on Oct. 11.
Colquitt, Lowndes and Valdosta are each 3-1. Richmond Hill is 2-2.
Camden County falls to 1-3 in the region. Tift, which fell to Valdosta 14-7 on Friday, is 0-4.
And Colquitt’s shot at the championship needed an improbable win in which the Packers gave up an 84-yard touchdown on a blocked field goal attempt on the last play of the first half and then surrendered a 93-yard interception return for another score that gave the Wildcats a 35-31 lead with 4:55 left in the third quarter.
And the Packers lost three starters to injuries during the course of the game to boot.
“We fought through a lot,” said Colquitt County coach Sean Calhoun. “But there was no panic. If someone made a mistake, they owned it and we got a big-time win against good team on the road.”
Camden helped, throwing two interceptions, losing a fumble and twice snapping balls over the punters head.
And the Packers got a big game from a player some fans might have forgotten: Ramsey Dennis.
All Dennis did was catch a 45-yard touchdown pass from Day’Shawn Brown in the first quarter and score both of Colquitt’s touchdowns in the final 6:24.
The Packers got another fine performance from senior kicker Brett Fitzgerald, who did not let the block of his field goal attempt in the closing seconds of the first half bother him.
His next field goal attempt was good and pulled the Packers to with one at 35-34 with three minutes left in the third quarter.
He converted another on the second play of fourth quarter that gave Colquitt a 37-35 lead.
And, of course, he was perfect on all six extra point attempts.
The Packers won the coin toss and deferred their choice until the second half.
But Camden’s first possession resulted in a Parks Riendeau pass being intercepted by Colquitt County defensive end Amari Wilson, who rumbled 32 yards for the game’s first touchdown.
But the Wildcats quickly tied the game when Antwan Williams capped a 65-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.
When the Packers finally got an offensive possession, they drove to a fourth-and-2 at the Camden 45.
Brown took the snap in the wildcat formation, but instead hitting the line trying to gain the necessary two yards, he threw a perfect pass to a wide open Dennis who scored to put the Packers up 14-7.
After the Colquitt forced a three-and-out, the Packers used 14 plays to get Fitzgerald’s first field goal of the game for a 17-7 lead.
Another Antwan Willams touchdown run with 7:27 left in the half pulled the Wildcats to within three at 17-14.
Colquitt scored less than a minute later.
A 31-yard kickoff return was followed by a 52-yard Brown run to the Camden 15 and after a Wildcats timeout, Brown took it in from there and Colquitt was up 24-14.
On the second play after the kickoff, Colquitt sophomore defensive back Josh Alford picked off a Riendeau pass and returned it 22 yards the Wildcats 10.
A pass interference penalty put the ball on the five and Jae Lamar took it in from there and the Packers were up 31-14 with with 6:23 left in the half.
With just under three minutes left in the half, the Wildcats fumbled the ball away and the Packers marched to the Wildcats 5.
But as time expired, Camden blocked Fitzgerald’s 22-yard field goal attempt and Na’Tarian King picked the ball up and raced 84 yards to the end zone.
Noah McCullers extra point narrowed the Packers halftime lead to 10 points.
And when the Packers were forced into a three-and-out on their first possession of the second half, the momentum seemed be favoring the home-standing Wildcats.
Camden got to within three points on a 1-yard Jordan Hardy touchdown with 6:26 left in the quarter.
Colquitt then got a 42-yard run from Brown, a 12-yard scamper by quarterback A’Zhiyen Alridge and a 16-run by Lamar to reach the Camden County 10.
But Camden’s Ja’maric Daley then intercepted an Alridge pass and returned it 93 yards to score and give the Wildcats their first lead of the game at 35-31.
But would be a long time before Camden scored again. And Colquitt ran off the next 20 points of the game.
The trek back to the lead started with a 38-yard Fitzgerald field goal with 3 minutes left in the third quarter to cut the Camden lead to 35-34.
And the Packers took advantage of an 11-yard punt after a poor snap to regain the lead on a 30-yard Fitzgerald field goal just 12 seconds in to the fourth quarter.
Camden made another bad snap in punt formation and although Colquitt was unable to turn it into points, it did set up a 58-yard Sam Miller punt that set the Wildcats back to their 1.
The Packers defense did not allow a yard on three Camden County rushing attempts and a short punt and an 18-yard return by Ry’Sheed Fuller put the Packers in business at the Wildcats 16.
On the first play, Dennis outran the Camden defense to the end zone and Colquitt had extended its lead to 44-35 with 6:24 remaining.
The Packers defense forced Camden to turn the ball over on downs moments later and Dennis scored his third and final touchdown on a 33-yard run and Colquitt led 51-35 with 3:47 left.
Riendeau connected with Georgia-committed tight end Elyiss Williams for a 9-yard touchdown pass with 1:16 left, but when the two-point conversion attempt failed and Davion Enoch recovered the onside kick, it was over the the Wildcats.
Colquitt rushed the ball for 42 times for 385 yards.
Brown carried 21 times for 189 yards. Lamar, who walked gingerly off the field in the third quarter and did not return, had 66 on 11 carries.
And Dennis, who was the Packers leading rusher last season, needed just six carries to amass 91 yards.
