CAIRO, Ga. — The cause of death for former city police chief Keith Sandefur was determined to be a single gunshot wound, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
A GBI medical examiner conducted an autopsy Friday. Sandefur’s death was the result of a single gunshot wound, though GBI did not reveal the location of the wound.
The official manner of Sandefur’s death is pending additional tests, a GBI spokesperson said.
Sandefur died Thursday afternoon at the city firing range on Wight Road.
The longtime city police chief was at the firing range with a city police investigator when the shooting occurred, the Grady County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed.
Further details, including who else may have been present to witness the incident, are not available at this time. A GBI spokesperson said additional details will be released when they are available.
The Cairo Police Department requested that the GBI conduct an investigation into Sandefur’s death Thursday evening. CPD does not have a role in the investigation, interim police chief Giovannie Santos stated.
The GBI’s Sylvester office is conducting the investigation because of the GBI Thomasville office’s investigation into Sandefur for a separate matter.
Sandefur’s death comes on the heels of his resignation as police chief earlier this month. The 39-year CPD veteran vacated his position Dec. 3 following his arrest earlier that day on two counts of felony theft by conversion.
GBI had alleged that Sandefur purchased property and charged the expenses to the City of Cairo. GBI said the property, which has since been recovered, was then given to Sandefur’s civilian associates.
