Participants of the annual Colquitt Regional Summer Internship Program tour the new PCOM South Georgia campus. The program is designed to afford upcoming high school seniors the opportunity to explore a variety of healthcare options, along with a supplemental course focusing on math skills that are essential to anyone pursuing a career in the healthcare industry.

MOULTRIE, Ga. – Colquitt Regional Medical Center recently graduated its fourth class of interns who participated in the annual Colquitt Regional Summer Internship Program.

The Summer Internship Program is designed to afford upcoming high school seniors the opportunity to explore a variety of healthcare options, along with a supplemental course focusing on math skills that are essential to anyone pursuing a career in the healthcare industry, according to a press release from the hospital.

“It is vital for the students in our area who are interested in healthcare to get firsthand experience in the field,” said Colquitt Regional President and CEO Jim Matney. “Colquitt Regional is proud to play an instrumental role in the learning process for many students in the area.”

Interns report to Colquitt Regional three days a week and gain exposure to a variety of specialties such as radiology, oncology, emergency medicine, dialysis, pain management, and rehabilitation. They work in a focused area for one week before rotating to a new area, ultimately getting experience in a total of six different focuses throughout the program.

Students start each day with an hour and a half of math instruction provided by an Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College instructor, followed by six hours in their focused area for the week.

This internship program was made possible through a partnership with the United Way of Colquitt County. Colquitt Regional received a grant that was allocated to help with costs associated with the internship program such as uniforms, meals, and supplies.

Yearta, Ed.D. “We are so grateful to the United Way for partnering with us to ensure we are providing the opportunities necessary for students to excel. The exposure that they receive is invaluable.”
