Former Hamilton County High and Belmont University star Kevin McClain has agreed to a play professionally with EWE Baskets Oldenburg of the German Bundesliga, the club announced July 3.

McClain is currently taking part in NBA Summer League as part of the Golden State Warriors.

“Kevin was our favorite player in this position for a number of reasons: he has offensive versatility, and can be used as a shooting guard and point guard,” Oldenburg head coach Mladen Drijencic said. “His playing style and role in college is similar to ours. This will help him adapt quickly to European basketball. The fact that Kevin starts his professional career here at EWE Baskets is a great honor for us.”

Oldenburg has agreed to an exit clause in the event McClain receives a full-fledged NBA contract after Summer League competition ends.

For McClain, the deal with EWE Baskets is a homecoming of sorts, as his maternal grandmother resides in Ulm, hours south of Oldenburg, and he holds a German passport thanks to his German-born mother.

McClain emerged as one of the top two-way players in college basketball this past season.

The 6-foot-3 guard recorded 30 double figure scoring games, including 19 consecutive to close the season. McClain delivered in the biggest of situations, most notably his game-high 29-point performance vs. Temple in the NCAA Tournament, leading Belmont to an 81-70 victory. He also had a game-high 20 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals — and game-winning shot with 2.3 seconds remaining — in Belmont’s victory at UCLA.

McClain scored 27 points at Southeast Missouri on March 2 as Belmont secured its fifth OVC regular season championship in seven years.

The Jennings native averaged 16.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game en route to All-OVC First Team honors.
