MAYO — Small Lafayette High School continues to produce college athletes. 

Softball player Ragan Barnes and basketball player Jasmine Lewis are the latest LHS grads to sign with colleges.

Barnes is headed to Division I Savannah State (Georgia) while Lewis will play at Lurleen B Wallace Community College in Alabama.    

“It’s really exciting to get the opportunity. It’s good to continue that legacy of Lafayette softball and go on to play college softball,” Barnes said.

Barnes played catcher for two seasons before moving to second base during her senior year. Despite missing some time with injuries in her final season at LHS, Barnes hit .283 and was second on the team with 12 RBIs.

She hit five doubles, scored 12 runs and was a leader on the team that advanced to the Final Four. 

“This wasn’t an easy year for her; she had toe issues and hand issues,” said Hornets coach Derek Garland. “But she stuck through it and was one of the leaders in a successful year we had.”

Barnes chose Savannah State over schools from North Carolina and Alabama. She will play in the North Florida All-Star Softball Series on June 11 at Oakleaf High. 

Lewis, a basketball standout who also participated in track and volleyball, was the 2018-19 Suwannee Valley Player of the Year. The FACA All-Star averaged 15.5 points, 12.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.0 steals during her senior campaign.

In five years, Lewis scored more than 2,000 points and grabbed 1,350 rebounds while leading the Hornets to four district titles and five regional finals. She also appeared in two Final Fours.
