MOULTRIE, Ga. — Several county volunteer fire departments responded to a grass fire this afternoon that threatened multiple manufactured homes in a subdivision on Denham Road.

Russell Moody, Colquitt County’s emergency management director and a volunteer firefighter, said a resident apparently set fire to a pile of trash and the wind caught it.

Grass was burned in seven yards and two fields, Moody said, but only one of the residences had damage as far as he knew. Some vinyl siding was damaged on that house.

“We were fortunate on that,” he said.

No one was hurt.

One of the residents, Louis Walker, said he tried to put out the fire as it came toward his house then ran inside to get his family out.

“It burned right up against the houses — right up against them!” Wanda Walker said. “And they (volunteer firefighters) got here and put it out.”

“It came through so fast,” Victoria Jones said.
