TIFTON, Ga. — Beautiful wood to beautiful art: That’s what happens when members of the Little River Woodturners, a regional craftsmen’s guild, turn a log, a limb, or part of a tree stump into a unique work of art. The Tifton Museum of Arts and Heritage will celebrate the skills of these artisans with an exhibit of their works from July 15 – July 30.

The public is invited to the opening reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 15. Viewers can enjoy refreshments and watch a live demonstration of the craft during the evening.

The exhibition will feature a variety of turned art, including, bowls, vases, Christmas or other decorative items, urns, even fountain pens,  all made from a variety of local  woods by woodturners from Tifton, Moultrie, Adel, Fitzgerald, Funston, Albany and Valdosta.  Many of the objects will be available for purchase.

The Little River Woodturners comprise a group of 20-30 artists who come together monthly to share and hone their talents. Inspired by an exhibit and workshop held several years ago at the museum, local farmer and craftsman James Walker, initiated the group, which has grown from a handful of  Tifton hobbyists to the larger group representing several south Georgia l communities.

The exhibit will be open through July 30, Tuesdays – Fridays 1-5 p.m.; Sunday 1-3 p.m. On Thursday evenings between  5 and 7 p.m. a live demonstration of woodturning on a lathe will occur.

Admission to the exhibit and events is free. The Museum of Arts and Heritage is located in downtown Tifton at 255 Love Avenue. For information, contact Syd Blackmarr, exhibits chair @229-388-1090 or go to www.tiftonmuseum.org.
