Schools name 3 new assistant principals

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Colquitt County School System announced three new assistant principals this week. Alicia Hiers, Ishia Dawson and Kristen Harrison will fill those roles at Colquitt County High School, C.A. Gray Junior High and Willie J. Williams Middle School, respectively, when the 2017-2018 school year gets underway.

The 2017-2018 school year will begin a little differently for Alicia Hiers. After 22 years as a classroom teacher, she will move into the Colquitt County High School assistant principal position left vacant by Todd Hall, who has been named the Federal Programs Director.

Hiers earned her bachelor’s degree in Spanish education, her master’s degree in Secondary Education, and her education specialist degree in Secondary Education (Curriculum & Instruction), all from Valdosta State University.

A Colquitt County native, she has taught Spanish at Colquitt County High School for 21 years as well as serving as the World Language Department chair since 2010. She began her teaching career at Tift County High School. Since joining the staff at Colquitt County High School, she has worked for principals Melton Callahan, Bob Jones, and presently Stephanie Terrell.
“I am looking forward to serving and supporting the students and teachers at CCHS in this new capacity as we strive to improve teaching and learning in all programs,” Hiers said.

Hiers is married to Dwayne and the have two daughters: Stephanie (husband Reid Diers)  and Maggie.

Ishia Dawson, C.A. Gray

Ishia Dawson will move into the C.A. Gray Junior High School assistant principal position of retiring Assistant Principal Sheila Smith.

Dawson, a 1994 Colquitt County High School graduate, earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Allied Health Sciences and her Master’s Degree in Special Education Interrelated, both from Albany State University. She went on to receive her Educational Leadership Specialist degree from Valdosta State University.

In January 2002, Mrs. Dawson began her career in education in the Colquitt County School System as an instructional provider at Funston Elementary. In the 2002-2003 school year she began teaching at C.A. Gray Middle School, where she taught reading, English/language arts, math, science, and social studies, as well as serving as a team leader and department chair. Dawson moved into a leadership role as an assistant principal at Macintyre Park Middle school in 2012 and returned to Colquitt County and C.A. Gray Junior High in 2015 to teach English/language arts and math.

“I’m honored by the opportunity to serve in this capacity in my hometown as well as my homeschool,” Dawson said. “I’m excited to support our faculty and community in preparing our students at C.A. Gray Junior High School for success. My office door is always open. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns as I begin my new role as assistant principal.”

Dawson is married to Darius Dawson, principal of the Colquitt County Achievement Center. They have three children, Ryan, Kaleb, and Kelsey and one grandchild, Jordan Dawson.

Kristen Harrison, Williams Middle

Kristen Harrison has been named an assistant principal at Willie J. Williams Middle School and will begin her new position beginning the 2017-2018 school year.

Harrison earned her bachelor’s in history from Georgia Southern University, her master’s in special education from Albany State University, and is currently pursuing her specialist degree in educational leadership from Valdosta State University.

She has been a special education teacher in the Colquitt County School System for eight years. In addition, she has served as the special education department chair for the previous two years.

“The middle school years are a formative time in the lives of our students, and I am excited to be given the opportunity to positively impact them in this new role,” Harrison said. “My mission is to make sure every student that walks through the doors of Willie J. Williams has a great middle school experience. Willie J. Williams has an excellent faculty and staff, and I look forward to being here to lead and serve them.”

Harrison and husband Justin (a CCHS guidance counselor) have two sons: John Parker and Powell.
