LIVE OAK — A torrid start and another big game from Jasmine Lewis led the Lafayette girls basketball team to a 62-32 victory against Suwannee on Tuesday.
Lewis dropped 22 points along with six assists and Haley Ellefson added 17 points to help LHS pick up a road victory and improve to 12-7 this season.
The Hornets took an 11-0 lead to start the game.
Lafayette coach Jimmy Blankenship was happy with his team’s performance as they prepare for a big game with Madison County. The Hornets travel to MCHS on Tuesday for the first round of the district tournament.
“We look like we’re starting to play and get to where we need to be for next week,” Blankenship said.
Lewis and Ellefson got the Hornets off to the quick start, and senior Teyonnia Lewis kept it going with her performance off the bench — knocking down two 3-pointers on her way to 10 first-half points.
Suwannee (1-19) put together its best run during the second quarter. The Bulldogs shot 5-of-7 from the field and scored 14 points.
“We started to move the ball, started to reverse it,” SHS coach Brian Bullock said. “We were finding open lanes to drive through. CC (Smith) stepped up. Those 14 points are the second most we’ve scored in a quarter. That was good to see against a good team.”
Smith had a team-high 14 points for Suwannee. Jasmine Jones scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds. Elise Cherry had five points.
Suwannee won its first game of the season on Jan. 19 with a 45-22 victory against Taylor County. The Bulldogs will play Taylor County again on Thursday, hosting TCHS at 5:30 p.m.
Suwannee hosts Rickards on Feb. 2 in the first round of the District 2-6A Tournament.
