The system began registering students in March but 114 spots are still available, according to a press release from the school system.

In 1993-1994, Colquitt County School System offered Pre-K classes on a small scale, beginning with 40 students. Since the inaugural year, Pre-K expanded to a robust 630 students in 2013-2014 and 608 students for the past two years.

With the growth and success of the program, administrators were asked to investigate other options of delivering the same quality service. In the fall of 2015, the district considered the possibility of a Pre-K Center. However, after a thorough situation analysis by multiple committees, the consensus was to continue to provide classes at each of the elementary schools.

“A Pre-K Center is not recommended at this time. We have thoughtfully and methodically weighed the pros and cons and have determined Pre-K should remain at the school sites,” Superintendent Samuel DePaul said.

Pre-K Director Lisa Strickland commented, “We are looking forward to a new group of students to encourage, nurture, and prepare for kindergarten. Our Pre-K teachers and staff are already planning and organizing for the new smiling faces of the 2016-2017 school year. Early learning and literacy are important to providing a child with the readiness skills for a solid educational foundation. Register your child today to join the fun of learning through the language-rich environments of our Pre-K classrooms.”

During annual registration, some 470 students were accepted. Parents are urged to register their children early to secure one of the 114 remaining spots.

Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis with in-zone applicants receiving first priority, the school system said.

Children must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2016, to enroll in Pre-K.
