MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Moultrie man was in the right place at the right time on Friday night — at least as far as drug agents were concerned.

Police arrested Donald Eugene Carey at a Highway 133 South convenience store after receiving a tip about someone selling prescription medication at the location.

“We received an anonymous complaint that a subject matching Mr. Carey’s description was going to be at Bob and Ann’s store and was going to be trying to sell some pills,” said Inv. John Vickers of the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Team. “We go to that location and see Mr. Carey (who is) matching the description. He had pills on him packaged in a manner consistent with someone trying to sell drugs.”

Carey had a number of suspected Tramadol — a prescription opioid pain medication — pills in a cigarette cellophane, Vickers said, and had used a cell phone to set up a deal with a potential buyer.

Carey did not have a prescription for the medication and had taken a substantial step toward committing the sale of the drugs by setting up a meeting, according to police.

Carey, 66, 141 Doe Lane, was charged Friday with criminal attempt or conspiracy to sell a Schedule 4 drug, possession of Tramadol, use of a communication facility, and drugs to be kept in original container.

Vickers said he has a lengthy criminal history in both Florida and Georgia.
