MOULTRIE — Dr. Alton Jefferson Whiddon Jr., 85, of Moultrie, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at Magnolia Manor South in Moultrie.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Addington, the Rev. Bill Hurdle, the Rev Elick Bullington and the Rev. Rick Turner officiating. A private family interment will be held at Pinecrest Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be John Baker, Whiddon Henry, Carter Henry, James Henry, Will Henry and Rich Tyndall. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Chastain, Robert Cobb, Robert Duggan, Hiller Gammage, Michael Harrison, Walter Harrison, Jim Lowry, Joe Smith and Sam Whatley.
Dr. Whiddon was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Ripley, Miss., son of the late Alton Jefferson Whiddon Sr. and Sarah Maude Barbour Whiddon. He was a retired dentist and a veteran. He earned his bachelor of science degree at Kent State University and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the St. Louis University School of Dentistry.
Dr. Whiddon served 12 years on the Colquitt County Board of Education, including as chairman, and he served as chairman of multiple committees at First United Methodist Church. A member of the American Dental Association, he was a lifetime member and honorable fellow of the Georgia Dental Association and was member and past president of the Southwestern District Dental Association. He was a member of the board of directors of the YMCA and served as a mentor through the YMCA Mentor Program for many years. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife, Cherie Anne Carter Whiddon of Moultrie; two sons, Jeff Whiddon of Moultrie and Carter Whiddon and wife Sherry of Tallahassee, Fla.; two daughters, Sally Tyndall and husband David of Moultrie and Anne Henry and husband Russ of Valdosta, Ga.; a brother, Warren Barbour Whiddon and wife Paula of Vero Beach, Fla.; and grandchildren, Sarah Tyndall Robinson and husband Ben of Houston, Texas, Rich Tyndall of West Point, N.Y., Ferrell Tyndall of Moultrie, Anna and Abby Whiddon of Tallahassee, Fla., and Whiddon, Carter, James and Will Henry of Valdosta, Ga.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jenifer Whiddon.
Visitation was 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22.
