Spain Short considered for Hall of Fame

Moultrie’s Lisa Spain Short is one of 35 nominees that will be considered by the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame’s Honors Court to be a member of the Class of 2009.
The GSHF’s screening committee met last week and considered 79 nominees and forwarded 35 it considered most deserving of induction.
The Honors Court will meet on Sept. 18. The induction ceremony will be held Feb. 28.
In January, Short was inducted into USTA Southern Section’s Southern Tennis Hall of Fame.
She also is a member of the Georgia Tennis Association’s Hall of Fame and the Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame.

• The eighth annual Ag Classic Golf Tournament at Abraham Baldwin Agriculture will be held on Monday, Oct. 6, at ABAC’s Forest Lakes Golf Club. There will be an 8 a.m. morning flight and a 1 p.m. afternoon flight with lunch served between flights.
The event is sponsored by the ABAC Ag Alumni Council to provide scholarships for students in the Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources. Proceeds from the previous tournaments have provided over $141,000 in scholarships.
The event is a four-man scramble. The $125 fee per golfer includes lunch, cart and greens fees, a premium golf shirt embroidered with the tournament logo, and a sleeve of golf balls.

• The Moultrie Sharks Swim Team will host its Fall Classic Swim Meet on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Memorial Pool at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex.
The format will be the GRPA short events. Ribbons for individual and relay events will be awarded.
High point awards will include the top six in each age group male and female.

• Delta State senior goalkeeper Trey Jones, son of Moultrie’s Bob and Traci Jones, has been named to the Gulf South Conference All-Conference team.
The Statesmen, who were 9-9-1 last year, are picked to finish fourth in the GSC.
Jones, a Lee County High graduate, played at Darton College before going to Delta State. He has played the last three years in the Super 6 and Mexican Summer Soccer leagues.
• Cole Willis shot a 73 in windy conditions Sunday, and emerged the winner of the 2008 Jack Oliver Invitational at Valdosta Country Club.
Willis, a member of the Valdosta State golf team, entered Sunday’s final round two shots behind VSU teammate Brent Witcher.
Playing in the final group with Witcher, Willis posted one of the best scores of the day, and passed his teammate, who shot a 76, for a one-stroke victory.
The grandson of Bennett and LeVonne Willis of Moultrie, Willis shot a 214, two shots under par, for the tournament.
• Former Packer Sherard Reynolds led the Valdosta State defense with nine tackles when the Blazers defeated Newberry 14-9 last Saturday in Newberry, S.C.
The victory raises the Blazers record to 2-0.
Valdosta State will be off this week and will face Southern Arkansas on Sept. 13.
