MOULTRIE — With her former Colquitt County High coach in attendance, Lisa Spain Short was inducted into the USTA Southern Section’s Southern Tennis Hall of Fame on Jan. 19 in a ceremony held at the Westin Atlanta North at Perimeter in Atlanta.
Spain Short was joined by outstanding North Carolina player Bill Weathers as the only two 2008 inductees.
She was inducted into the Georgia Tennis Association’s Hall of Fame in 1995 and into the Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
While playing for Coach Mike Jenkins at Colquitt County High, she was a four-time state champion and posted a 56-1 high school record.
Jenkins, who coached tennis at Moultrie and Colquitt County High for 30 years, was on hand for the Hall of Fame induction of one of his most successful players.
After graduating from Colquitt County High in 1980, she became the first female tennis player at the University of Georgia to be awarded a full scholarship.
At Georgia, she played for Dan Magill and was the No. 1 singles and doubles player for four years.
As a senior, she was the ITCA All-America singles winner and in May of 1984 won the NCAA singles championship.
She was a four-time All-SEC and three time All-American and later played on the Women’s Tennis Association circuit from 1984-1987.
She is the daughter of Hank and Jean Spain of Moultrie. She and husband Herbert Short, also of Moultrie, have three children and live in Atlanta.
