Rifle team wins opener

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High air rifle team opened its 2006 season with a 1,140-1,039 victory over Crisp County on Thursday in Cordele.

Victoria Dampier led Colquitt County with a 287 out of a possible 300, including a 97 on both the prone and kneeling positions and a 93 standing.

Yohann Brinson had a 285, including a team-high 98 prone, a 97 kneeling and a 90 standing.

Jessica Corona and Shontae Robinson each shot a 284.

Corona had a 94 in both the prone and standing positions. She had a 96 kneeling.

Robinson had 96 in both the prone and kneeling positions and a 92 standing.

Colquitt County shot a 385 prone, a 369 standing and a 386 kneeling for its 1,140.The top four of a team’s six scores count.

Amanda Thompson had a 263 and Megan Dubberly a 258 in their first matches, scores that impressed coach Gunnery Sgt. Emmett Bryant.

“The new shooters did well,” Bryant said. “I’m really pleased.

“Overall, we had a good night. That was a good start for the year.”

Colquitt County will hold its first home match of the season on Tuesday when it plays host to Dooly County.
