Former murder suspect
arrested in recent drug bust

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Group executed a search warrant at a residence in Moultrie Feb. 28. Three people were arrested on drug charges.

One of them was Bonny Lee Lewis, who was tried but not convicted in a 2014 homicide.

Lewis and another man went to trial in 2015, accused in the shooting death of Danny Hill, but the trial ended in a mistrial. Lewis was sentenced earlier that same year in federal court to serve 60 months for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was released June 19, 2020, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website.

In the current case, the Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Group served a search warrant at 816 Eighth Ave. S.E. about 4 p.m. Feb. 28, according to Investigator Jesus Valdez. The search yielded approximately 24 grams of crack cocaine, 2.1 ounces of marijuana, digital scales, baggies and cash.

Three men were arrested at 816 Eighth Ave. S.E., which included Lewis, Benjamin Jerome McGee and Don Cornelius DeBruce, said Valdez.

“During the investigation, investigators were also able to obtain a second search warrant for 824 Eighth Ave. S.E.,” said Valdez.

The search yielded an amount of marijuana and an amount of cocaine, said Valdez. The  drugs had not been weighed at the time of the report. He also said there was a digital scale in the residence.

Lewis, of 817 Hillcrest Ave. S.E., and McGee, of 721 First St. S.W., were both charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and two counts each of possession of tools for commission of a crime.

DeBruce, of 2809 Fifth St. S.E., was charged with possession of cocaine and possession and use of drug-related objects.
