Packer notes: Glass, Stanford
qualify for state fishing

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County bass fishing team of Haydyn Glass and Andrew Stanford has qualified for the state tournament.
The pair caught five fish for 12 pounds, 14 ounces in the March 8 qualifier on a windy day at Clarks Hill Lake.
Only one other Colquitt County team – Brayden Carter and Cole Thompson – managed to land a fish at Clarks Hill.
Glass and Stanford join Hayden Hamm and John Davis Summerlin in qualifying for the state tournament.
Hamm and Summerlin qualified at Lake Oconee.
The next qualifier will be held on April 5 at West Point Lake.
The state finals will be held on May 3 at Lake Lanier.
Of this and that:
• Former Moss Farms and U.S. Olympic team diver Carson Tyler will compete on both springboards and on platform at NCAA Nationals, which will be held March 26-29 in Federal Way, Washington.
A senior at Indiana University, Tyler was named to the All-Big 10 second team after finishing second on platform, third on 1-meter and fifth on 3-meter at the Big 10 championships.
• The Colquitt County varsity soccer teams swept Valdosta on Tuesday heading into Friday’s non-Region 1-6A home match against Cairo.
Lucy Taunton scored four goals to lead the Lady Packers to an 11-1 victory over the Lady Cats.
Chelsea Moreno scored three times and Judith Moctezuma and Marley Armstrong each had two goals.
The Lady Packers are now 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the region as they prepare to meet the Syrupmaids.
The Colquitt County boys defeated Valdosta 6-2 to raise their overall record to 6-2. They are 4-1 and in second place in the region.
The Cairo boys will bring a 5-1 record to Packer Park on Friday when they face the Colquitt County boys.
• The Colquitt County junior varsity boys soccer team defeated Valdosta 10-0 on Thursday and has earned a first-round bye in the region tournament.
The JV Packers are now 6-0-1 and in first place in the region.
Against Valdosta, Alex Aviles and Carlos Valencia-Garcia each scored three goals.
Romeo Lopez, Angel Gomez-Romulo, Aiden Nunez and Jesus Portillo each scored once.
Valencia-Garcia also was credited with three assists. Lopez, Gomez-Romulo, Nunez and Victor Morales also had assists.
The JV Lady Packers started the sweep with an 8-0 victory over the Lady Cats.
Kamila Del Angel scored four times; Kinlee Luna scored times; and Jade Gonzalez scored once.
The Colquitt JV tams will travel to Tift County on Monday for a pair of non-region matches against the Blue Devil.
Emily Allegood is hitting .339 with five doubles, two triples, two home runs and eight runs batted in for the 25-1 Florida SouthWestern State softball team.
Carliss Johnson is averaging 11.6 points and 4.1 assists in 26 games for the Albany Tech women’s basketball team.
• Senior right-hander Jeb Johnson is 2-0 with a 3.00 earned run average in nine relief appearances for the 12-6 Mercer University baseball team.
The former Packer has struck out 11 batters and issued just two walks in 12 innings.
JT Whatley leads the Thomas University baseball team in hitting, with a .338 average; home runs, with three; and runs batted in, with 19.
The former Packer is a senior infielder for the Night Hawks.
Also for Thomas University, pitcher Gavin Steptoe is 1-1 with a 6.17 earned run average.
