MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County girls tennis team has won its first two matches to start the 2025 season.
And with victories over Thomas County Central and Berrien under their belts, the Lady Packers face their Region 1-6A opener on Wednesday.
Richmond Hill will be at Packer Park at 3:30 p.m. as the quest for a region championship begins.
The Colquitt County girls are starting their eighth season under head coach Amber Day and they opened with a 5-0 win at Thomas County Central and a 3-2 win over Berrien on Monday at Packer Park.
Playing No. 1 singles for the Lady Packers is sophomore Julia Costin, who performed at No. 2 singles as a freshman.
She won against Thomas County Central 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.
On Monday, she got the deciding point in the 3-2 win over Berrien with a three-set 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win.
“I am incredibly proud of Julia for her match,” Day said. “Her ability to adjust her playing style showed her resilience and growth as a singles player.
“She is going to make a tough region competitor.”
Senior Emily Lampman is playing No. 2 singles after being an All-Region selection last year at No. 3.
She won 6-0, 6-4 over her Thomas County Central opponent and got the Lady Packers first point against Berrien with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Freshman Allie Rowley made her debut against Central and won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
“She did well when she settled in and found her rhythm,” Day said. “I am excited to see her grow as a player on the high school team this season.”
Rowley lost 2-6, 3-6 against Berrien.
Playing No. 1 doubles are seniors Ada Craft and Jayley Johnson.
Craft moved to doubles after playing singles the last two seasons. Johnson played No. 2 doubles the last two years.
“We have been putting a lot of practice time into doubles for the last two years and these two are the product of the hard work and dedication,” Day said.
“They are strategic and complement each other’s playing styles well. They will be a top competitor in the region at this spot.”
They were first off the court against Central, winning 6-1, 6-2 and fell 1-6, 6-7 (2-7) against Berrien.
Laura Gonzales and Jaelyn Wier return at No. 2 doubles.
They won 6-4, 6-2 against Central and earned the second point against Berrien, winning 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
“These two ladies have been working in the offseason and are very strong together,” Day said. “I look forward to them being challenging in the region as well.”
In addition to Rowley, six other ninth-graders are on the team in junior varsity spots.
The junior varsity team won 5-1 against Central.
Junior Frances Bius played singles and won 8-4. She also joined freshman Lauren Nelms in a double match and the two won 6-1.
