Enrollment dips at VSU
VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University had a slight drop in enrollment this fall in comparison to fall of last year, according to the University System of Georgia’s Fall 2017 Semester Enrollment Report.
The report stated VSU’s current enrollment is 11,341, a 0.3 percent decrease from the 11,375 enrolled in fall 2016.
VSU’s spring 2017 enrollment was 10,714, just one student short of spring 2016’s enrollment, according to the USG enrollment reports.
However, more beginning freshman enrolled this fall semester than the 1,448 in fall of last year.
Among the 3,134 new students enrolled in VSU this semester, 1,628 were beginning freshmen, 770 were transfers, 124 were dual-enrollment students, 26 were transients, 560 were graduate students and 26 fell under other categories, according to the USG.
Overall, at VSU, there are 2,341 freshmen, 1,841 sophomores, 1,976 juniors, 2,236 seniors, 2,563 graduate students, 33 transients, 184 dual-enrollment students and 167 who fall under other categories.
According to the recent report, the race/ethnicity breakdown for fall 2017 at VSU is Hispanic/Latino 681, 6 percent; American Indian or Alaska Native 29, 0.3 percent; Asian 267, 2.4 percent; Black or African American 3,960, 34.9 percent; Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander 7, 0.1 percent; White 5,954, 52.5 percent; two or more races 396, 3.5 percent; and race unknown or undeclared 47, 0.4 percent.
Among those enrolled, 4,016 are male and 7,325 are female, making VSU’s student population 64.6 percent female. According to the USG reports, VSU followed the fall 2016 trend of having a female majority enrolled.
Currently, VSU has 70.3 percent full-time enrollment, which is a 0.4 percent decrease from fall 2016, the report stated.
