Students win awards at Reading Bowl event

MOULTRIE, Ga. —The C.A. Gray reading bowl team has been working hard all year long on the Tome Society “It List” books for the junior level.

Students read between five and 10 books and created practice quiz questions on each that contributed to the club’s Quizlet account. Some students participated in library practice sessions and online quizzes; others completed projects inspired by the book list.

Twelve of the most active reading bowl members attended a student conference in Gainesville, Ga., called Tomecon with club advisors Melanie Turner and Tina Johnston.

The conference played host to authors of many of the “It List” books from every grade band. Students were able to create their own schedule from the many offerings across nine sessions such as writing workshops, author signings, blackout poetry, yoga, watercolor bookmark creation, and more. The culminating activity was an awards ceremony where next year’s book list was announced along with winners of this year’s project categories.

While teachers Melany Turner and Tina Johnston said they were proud of every single student who read, took quizzes, and made projects, the following students placed in their competition areas:

• Eddie Hamilton – 1st place – It List Book Review Blog Article.

• Zaeli Lopez – 2nd place – Book Print Video.

• Silvia Aguilar-Lopez and Berenice Maldonado-Garcia – 3rd place – Library Video Commercial.
