Cairo steams into state playoffs

ALBANY, Ga. — The Cairo Syrupmakers made it eight straight with a convincing win against Dougherty on Friday.

Cairo, the Region 1-AAAA champ, blasted the Trojans 38-8 at Hugh Mills Stadium.

The Syrupmakers, 8-2 for the season and 8-0 in the region, will host Henry County in the Class AAAA first round.

Matthew Peters opened the scoring with a 7-yard run in the first quarter, and Noah Jones added the point after for a 7-0 lead with 6:49 to go in the first quarter. Nick Gosier added a 7-yard TD later in the first quarter, and another Jones PAT pushed the lead to 14-0.

Cairo stretched the lead to 21-0 on Gosier’s second TD run, and the Syrupmakers padded the lead to 28-0.

JaMarcus Vick scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter, and Jones kicked a field goal later in the third quarter to complete Cairo’s scoring.
