10 & under softball walks off with District 3
MOULTRIE – Picking up where things left off from a lightning delay Tuesday, Moultrie-Colquitt County’s 10 & under machine-pitch softball team staged three different rallies Thursday to win the GRPA District 3 final game 14-13 over Lee County.
Lee County led 10-8 after 3 1/2 innings were done Tuesday. But Moultrie-Colquitt went ahead 11-10 in the bottom of the fifth Thursday.
Beginning a slew of hits down the third-base line, Taylor Hewett led off with a single, and that’s where Jaden Sealy went for a hit, so did Rhylee Carter to plate the first run. Amelia Mercer got credit for the tying RBI, and Allie Eure brought in the go-ahead run.
Lee County, however, put three hits together for the tying run, 11-11, in the top of the sixth. That sent the game to extra frames, and Lee – with a runner on second to begin the turn – scored two times on two hits.
So, Moultrie-Colquitt’s second rally came with two outs in the home seventh. Sadie Wetherington was on base and scored on Hewett’s two-out single. Sealy reached on an infield safety allowing Hewett to knot things back up 13-13.
After three straight outs kept things even for the home eighth, Carter was on second. She advanced on a ground out by Mercer. Eure put the ball in play, and Carter rushed home forcing a throw that did not keep her from winning the game and tournament.
This final game began on Tuesday despite threatening conditions. Moultrie-Colquitt entered it unbeaten, and Lee County needed two wins to take the trip to the GRPA state tournament in Effingham County the last week of June.
Moultrie-Colquitt scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning, staking an 8-2 lead. The host team had 43 runs in three previous wins and – mainly on the strength of defense – only gave up four.
But Lee County well exceeded that in one turn, the top of the third. Using seven hits, a couple of errors and heads-up baserunning, Lee took the 10-8 lead that stood for two days.
Hannah Smith was key at third base, as was ‘pitcher’ Kaylynn Harp.
• On Monday, Moultrie-Colquitt played the 10 & under softball winners’ bracket final against Worth County and won 10-2 in five innings.
The team from Sylvester loaded the bases in the top of the first inning and failed to score.
Moultrie-Colquitt would not fail in the home half producing five runs.
Hewett hit a one-out single and Sealy’s pop-up dropped to the ground fair. Carter batted home both on a single.
Mercer kept the onslaught going with an RBI hit, and with two outs Bryleigh Webb popped up a softball ball that also dropped into fair ground. That upped the lead to 4-0, and two more hits from Elizabeth Tucker and Anna-Lynn Armstrong made it a 5-0 game.
Wetherington began the home second bunting her way on base. Kamya Thomas singled with one out, and Hewett’s single gave her two RBI. Moultrie-Colquitt went up 8-0 on Carter’s two-out hit.
Webb singled and scored on a two-out hit by Armstrong in the third, and Sealy batted home Thomas with two outs in the fourth (10-0).
