Daughters of the American Revolution celebrates Georgia Day
TIFTON — The Daughters of the American Revolution, Tallassee Chapter donated a Georgia state flag to Tift County High School’s GA 51st JROTC to honor Georgia Day on Feb. 12.
Georgia Day celebrates the day the first Georgia colony settlers landed on what would become Savannah, on Feb. 12, 1733.
DAR member Suzanne Click gave a brief overview of the founding of Georgia.
The Georgia colony was meant to act as not only a buffer between Spanish colonies in Florida and the English colonies, but as a second chance for those in England who were in debtors prison or weren’t able to find employment.
DAR member Bobby Fresh gave a brief overview of the flag’s symbology and meaning.
Major Peter Candelario, who heads up the JROTC, handed each of the DAR attendees a challenge coin, a small medallion bearing the unit’s emblem and given to show membership.
