Colquitt County High School honors underclassmen

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County High School underclassmen were honored with a variety of awards for their achievements during the 2023-24 school year.

The ceremony was held at Withers Auditorium Wednesday, May 1, where departmental awards, GPA awards and Georgia Certificates of Merit were given to students in the sophomore and junior classes.

Each year Colquitt County students participate in the Young Georgia Authors competition, a statewide writing contest for public school students. The purpose of the Young Georgia Authors writing competition is to encourage students to develop enthusiasm for and expertise in their writing, to provide a context to celebrate their writing successes, and to recognize student achievement in arts and academics. Colquitt County High School’s Young Georgia Authors sophomore class winner was Tinsely Adair.

The annual Yale Book Awards, sponsored by Yale University and financed and implemented by the Yale Club of Georgia, recognize outstanding high school juniors for their character, leadership, scholarship, and intellectual promise. This year’s recipient is Melissa Rodriguez Aravalo.

The Advanced Placement United States History Academic Achievement Award is presented to the student who demonstrates exceptional scholarly achievement in AP History. This award is based on the student’s dedication, passion, and pursuit to discover historical knowledge. Students who receive this award are recognized for their academic excellence, curiosity, and dedication to learning. This award goes to Lucas Babb.

The Advanced Placement Government Award is given to students who demonstrate outstanding college-level achievement in their coursework and pursuit of knowledge in regard to the AP Government and Politics curriculum set forth by the College Board. This award is based on the student’s perseverance and concerted effort to tackle difficult concepts at an accelerated level of study. Students who receive this award are recognized for their academic excellence and pursuit of high-level learning opportunities. This award goes to Amy Paz-Paz.

The Advanced Placement Psychology Award is given to students who demonstrate outstanding college-level achievement in their coursework and pursuit of knowledge in regard to the AP Psychology set forth by the College Board. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is committed to promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism. The John Benning Chapter of NSDAR presents the Excellence in American History Award and medal to a junior student for Outstanding Work in American History. Presenting the award was Suzanne Leimer. The award recipient was Turner Causey.

The Woodmen Life History Award is presented to a student who demonstrated outstanding proficiency in United States History. This award goes to Owen Croft.
