FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A soldier from Moultrie was found dead in his barracks room on Thanksgiving Day at Fort Bragg.

Pfc. Nicholas C. Martinez had been in the Army for a little more than a year, officials told the Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer. He was training to become a Special Forces soldier.

According to the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Martinez was assigned to the Student Support Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group.

He was found unresponsive on Thursday evening, officials said. His death is under investigation.

Martinez, 21, of Moultrie, Ga., enlisted in the Army in September 2016, according to a Nov. 25 story about his death on the Fayetteville Observer’s website, www.fayobserver.com.

Prior to coming to Fort Bragg for Special Forces training, he had trained at Fort Benning, Ga., fayobserver.com reported. At the Special Warfare Center and School, Martinez had completed the Special Forces Preparatory and Conditioning Course and was awaiting additional training.

He is survived by his parents, Rolando and Donna Martinez, of Moultrie; sisters, Michelle Martinez and Hayley Martinez; and brother, Rolando Martinez Jr.

Martinez’s death is the second of at least three this month at the North Carolina Army base, according to other stories from the Fayetteville Observer. Robert Thornton Jr., 29, of Cairo, Ga., an equipment repairman in the 1st Special Forces Command, collapsed while running and died Nov. 14. Spc. Carlton L. Butler, 22, of North Miami Beach, Fla., a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, was found dead in his barracks room on Fort Bragg Saturday.

All three deaths were under investigation as of the time the Fayetteville Observer published each of their stories.
